The Pontificio Istituto Liturgico (PIL) in Rome, in collaboration with Ufficio Nazionale per i Beni Ecclesiastici e l’Edilizia di Culto (of the CEI), is creating its second Summer Course in “Architecture and Art for the Liturgy”. The main objective is to provide insights into the core subjects of architecture, art, liturgy and music as an introduction to the two-year High Specialization programmes organized by the PIL during the normal academic year. As well, this Summer Course allows a useful basic introductory training for those, who, for whatever reason, cannot follow the full High Specializations.
The goal is not (and could not be) to teach “how to make” an architectural or artistic composition, or music for worship, as the compositional choices stem from the unique talent of each professional. Attention is focused instead on fully understanding “what is” a church, or how you structure symbolically and functionally a sacred building.
Consequently, participants become aware that architecture, art and music are placed at the service of the liturgy, and not vice versa; in this sense the “for” in the title becomes all the more emblematic. This international course will be held in English.
The Course is mainly addressed to designers (architects, engineers, artists) and historians, but all degree, Religion teacher and religious who show a real interest in these core Christian themes, are welcome to apply to the Summer Course 2020.
The programme will be intensive, running for six days from Monday 8 to Saturday 13 June 2020. Daily lessons will be held from 10,00-12,30 and 15,30-18,00 at the: Pontificio Ateneo S. Anselmo (5 Piazza Cavalieri di Malta, Rome)
This timing makes up twelve lessons and 36 hours of study. Full attendance is obligatory.
The full price of the Summer Course is 600 euro. This course is exclusively full-time. Online registry can be made using the following link www.anselmianum.com. Alternatively, for those in Rome, participants can register directly with the Secretary of the Ateneo, Monday through Friday, during office hours from 09,30- 12,00 and 15,00 to 17,00.
