Art for Christian Worship

Advanced training course 2020-2021. Year A

General information

The course is structured in two years according to a double rhythm: the frontal theoretical lessons dedicated to the ecclesial building and to the mystagogy of ecclesial spaces are in fact systematically combined with a workshop activity related to the points discussed: this interaction aims at achieving a practical knowledge of the criteria that have presided over - and continue to preside over - the design of the ecclesial space in its different components.
Lesson attendance is mandatory. In particular, absences for a maximum of 4 academic hours are allowed. It is possible to communicate to the person in charge of the course any absences and recoveries.

Course description

The frontal lectures dedicated to the study of the sense of architectural forms and interior furnishings of Christian buildings of worship, as well as their monumental figurative expression, are intended to answer two major questions: How Christians have very soon come to configure the main models of celebratory spaces, drawing from the existing architectural and figurative language what was appropriate to the Christian message? In what way, by adapting the forms and material to the original content and unrepeatable Christianity, have created something specific and unique, but at the same time in tune with the language of the Sacred, common to the great religious traditions of humanity? Understanding how this formidable process happened of inculturation helps the Christian artist of today to avoid two opposite but similar dangers: wanting to repeat the models of the past or wanting to completely deny them. Knowing how to recognize which aspects were chosen or omitted and why, he comes in fact enabled to grasp in the language of today's culture those elements that allow us to create spaces and figurative works in harmony with our time and at the same time with the ever present mystery of Christ the Lord celebrated in the liturgy. The deepening of the mystagogical sense of the ecclesial building globally understood will in turn help the architect and the artist to recognize the inalienable nucleus, since it is linked to the timeless dimension of Christian worship, present in the Tradition.
The practical exercises carried out in the laboratory, which include the analysis of images, visual exercises, creation of sketches, drawings, cartoons, projects of iconographic programs, will serve to acquire a factual understanding of what is is learned. They will consist of observing works related to the Christian building of worship belonging to the millennial tradition of the Church, to learn to identify the criteria that have guided craftsmen-artists in the realization of masterpieces timeless for God and humanity.
